Done carefully, this could be a good thing. It could help lower the federal deficit and the growth in the national debt with little hurt to homeownership.
In gross dollars, the mortgage tax deduction is one of the largest exemptions in the federal tax code. About 25 percent of taxpayers benefit from it, with more benefit at the upper end.
If this were a deduction for a job-creating investment, we would be inclined to defend it. The economy is short of investment right now. But housing is consumption, and the deduction for mortgages benefits the housing industry only indirectly.
The deduction is for debt. The social value of the deduction is that it helps people buy a home. But the social value is at the lower end, which suggests that the deduction could be reduced for people with higher in-.
Also, a deduction might be allowed only on the amount of debt used to fund the purchase of a home and not for debt added later on.
It has never had a tax deduction for mortgage interest. Its rate of homeownership, 67 percent, is within 2 percentage points of the U.
We are not advocating the Canadian system. Any wholesale take-away of a tax break for mortgages will tend to hit the real-estate market, which has been hit already and is feeling tender.
But as part of a resetting of federal taxing and spending, Congress should carefully trim the deduction, keeping a meaningful break where it does the most good.

This set shares numerous aspects of its design with Death Star and Death Star, combining several different scenes from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back in a single model, the external shape of which loosely resembles Cloud City in the movie.
The absence of a detailed exterior may disappoint some people, although that may restrict the space inside so I think an open design was probably the most practical alternative.
Almost every scene based around Cloud City is included, ranging from the brightly-furnished dining room to the sombre interrogation chamber.
They are connected by a series of doors and passageways so minifigures can travel between the different rooms, just as they do in the movie. The layout of the model seems logical, beginning with a landing pad which is connected to the dining room, an apartment and the chamber in which C-3PO encounters a squad of Stormtroopers.
Each room is intricately furnished with details from the film. I am particularly impressed by the light fixture on the wall in the dining room and the miniature rendition of Cloud City is lovely, despite not appearing in the original movie.
In addition, the circular windows look perfect in relation to the onscreen location but I am not sure what the balcony outside is intended to represent.
Perhaps this relates to the neighbouring carbon-freezing chamber. Speaking of which, the carbon-freezing chamber looks fantastic in my opinion. Its shape matches the movie very closely and I am pleased to see another carbon-freezing function included, not unlike that from 's Cloud City!
I am disappointed that the Technic elements beneath the floor have not been concealed, although exposed Technic liftarms do not feel wholly out of place in such an industrial environment.
Unfortunately, it occupies a relatively small section of this set. The atmospheric sensor balcony, on which the duel comes to an end, is impressively detailed but I think the control room, where Darth Vader hurls objects at Luke using the Force, could have been expanded.
The next quadrant includes the interrogation chamber, a prison cell and a landing zone for the Cloud Car. I am not convinced that the latter feature was necessary but this area could also be used for the duel between Darth Vader and Luke.
The interrogation chamber is only shown clearly on the back of the box but looks great, including a rotating torture device and room to stand some supervising Imperial personnel.
A circular landing platform occupies the final section of this model. It looks fairly plain but matches the source material and I like this rendition of the Slave I, despite its small size which reminds me of Slave I.
The colour scheme looks brilliant and I am impressed with the shape of the dark red engine cowling. Of course, Slave I remains the definitive model of Boba Fett's famous vehicle but this version is far more suitable for play.
The shape of the bodywork looks good but I believe dark orange would have been a more appropriate colour than dark red. Admittedly, the craft does appear red in certain material but dark orange has been used consistently in recent years and looks far more interesting to me.
The selection is reasonably comprehensive and I am pleased to see that multiple versions of Han Solo and Princess Leia are included, especially since the smuggler is the first Star Wars figure to feature dual-moulded legs!
Unfortunately, neither Leia minifigure sports the jumpsuit that she wears during her escape from Cloud City in the film.
Moreover, Leia's hair piece requires improvement and the Han Solo in Carbonite element has not been updated to reflect the character's new hair style.
A new backpack containing C-3PO might also have been included for Chewbacca. Otherwise, I am very satisfied with this minifigure selection. Lando Calrissian stands out in particular and the Cloud Car pilots make clever use of an existing helmet which looks great.
The only obvious absentee is everyone's favourite background character, Willrow Hood! I am quite impressed with the official images of this set and am looking forward to actually building it next month.
The interior detail is marvellous and I think the individual rooms have been arranged in a sensible manner, loosely replicating the order of each scene in The Empire Strikes Back and allowing minifigures to travel between them.
However, I also understand the criticism which has been levelled at Betrayal at Cloud City. The model appears unsuitable for display which is disappointing and its colour scheme seems rather muddled in certain areas, although the individual rooms look fantastic when compared with the source material.
Despite these issues, I remain optimistic about the set and am excited to add it to my Star Wars collection! Are you looking forward to Betrayal at Cloud City or do you think there is room for improvement?
Let us know in the comments. Looks unfinished, box art looks horrible, minifigs can't even save this. I am not satisfied nor happy!
Looks like the Betrayal part is real as most thought that an enclosed Cloud City was what was coming to us. First time brickset comment-er.
Had to create an account to say: The amount of griping and complaining by Star Wars "fans" is seriously impressive. Even by pre-school standards.
If you don't like it, you do realize there is no law requiring you to buy it, right? If someone wants to pick up 2, elements, create a better rendition of Cloud City, and THEN say, "See what more could have been done!
But--if you haven't done that--then your whining is just 3-year-old babble. Nice job, Lego developers and engineers!
Some really amazing concepts and building techniques going on in that set. If I had 1, years and 2, elements, I could not have done better.
And I'm happy to admit it. Don't listen to the 3-year-olds; it's their nap time. Actually what is the set name Betrayal at Cloud City is what I've been betrayed by this set itself.
It could be better with the seperate the sections with multiple sets in my opinion. I think it's a pretty interesting set.
The box art is kind of weird, but the set itself is neat. I especially like that Midi-Scale Slave I.
All this negativity is frustrating. There's no betrayal here. LEGO didn't promise anyone anything. You don't have to buy this.
Some Star Wars fans aren't helping with their reputation for being petulant and entitled. I personally think this looks like a fantastic playset, and I think kids especially are going to enjoy acting out scenes from the movie.
There's lots of impressive detail, and the minifigure selection is great. A lot of bad opinions seem to be given about this set - I do have to wonder exactly what were you expecting of a LEGO set depicting Cloud City?
The only alternative I can think of would be a very small scale Architecture-like set. I think they did a pretty good job designing this, it looks great especially in terms of playability.
Feeling the odd one out here but I love it! Each room is so close to the film I can forgive all else. I have wanted a Death Star style Cloud City since buying back in I loved how the Death Star captured the shape of the exterior structure from the films, while also providing all the interior seen in episodes IV and VI, ingeniously connected by the central elevator, doorways and hatches.
Constructing Cloud City in a similar way, would have been great, but probably not possible, on account of gravity.
It's hard to do landing platforms that pesky gravity again , and I think the tan one is reasonable, but leaving a big space that should have been devoted to the duel between Luke and Vader, one of the most iconic scenes in film history, to be used as a parking space for the cloud car, that is this set's biggest sin, particularly as it compromises the carbon chamber as well.
Had there been a floor under the carbon chamber, and the cloud car parking lot been used for the rooms where Luke fights Vader, I would have been ready to forgive the crampedness of the rest of the rooms, but as it is, I'm not a fan.
Yeah, I'm sure because it's Star Wars it'll sell like hotcakes, but frankly I find this set underwhelming. A series of modular sets that could be connected together would have much more appropriately captured the essence of Cloud City and be easier and more attractive to display.
Definitely one to pass on, especially at that price point. If so, what does that say for the playability of that section?
Since starting this comment, I've noticed there is actually one picture on the back of the box depicting the interrogation scene, so I guess the image IS out there, but still not much to go off, especially when that one picture doesn't appear to be available for viewing separately anywhere else.
Still concerned about the playability all in all. I'm also concerned about another angle they haven't shown off. The landing pad from the outside.
My concern there being the dark red corridor just apparently opening up into nothingness. Just apparently an exposed outside corridor section that's right next to the landing pad?
The "diaper suit" as Carrie Fisher put it that Leia wears in the carbon freezing chamber and while escaping Cloud City is considered close enough to the Hoth jumpsuit that the latter can stand in for it.
The lack of a new hairpiece is the only real miss. I think TLG designers did a great job here. It looks fantastic and I can't wait to buy it.
Who says you can't display it? I have a perfect spot and plenty of room next to my UCS Falcon for this bad boy. All you whiners and complainers can wallow in your negativity and sadness.
Won't spoil my excitement for this set! I mean, the set is called Betrayal At Cloud City. Neat, but no way I can afford this.
Don't care much for how the Cloud Car is rendered, anyway. Maybe they'll release a better Cloud Car as a set later with a couple of pilots.
I hope they do a Battle Pack of some kind later, too, so that there's an affordable way to get Lando, Lobot, and a couple of Bespin guards.
Listen, people, they made a new label just for this. Personally I love this set! I always prefer minifig scale sets that I can play with and put figures in rather than just build and display them , that being a reason why Ewok Village is my only UCS Set!
I cannot wait to get it! Sorry LEGO, but this looks terrible! Box art awful, the figures are a quite "boring", and the all set looks unfinished..
My concern isn't really with the model itself. It does look like a really fun and detailed playset for kids, the problem is the question of how many kids will be able to afford it.
It's fully okay that LEGO made a playset rather than a display model, but if they intended to do so, I feel like the size of the build should possibly have been brought down.
As it is, it seems that many kids who would really enjoy this set might not be able to get it while adult fans, who have the income to spend more money on things for themselves, might not want it because of how it is targeted more toward play.
It's an awkward situation where I worry that the target audience for this will be limited, just as happened with Assault on Hoth. That was also probably a really fun playset for kids, if they were fortunate enough to afford it but because of its huge size and price, most of the consumers who would be buying it adults weren't attracted to it.
I agree that LEGO is first and foremost a toy for children and they must be the priority; but knowing that the price range is more in adult fan territory, I don't think it's surprising that the response to this has been divisive.
I personally feel like LEGO need to take design cues from previous large sets like Ninjago City or the Ewok Village where there was both playability for the children who could afford it, and displayability for adult fans who it would be more available to.
Overall I am pleased. They hit all the main Bespin scenes and all the main characters in minifig form. I will probably end up buying it, after waiting all these years, but I can't help but feel it could have been better.
Things I would tweak to make me love it: I first saw this four months ago, and posted in forums then that it was a DS-style playset.
I don't know why people are moaning about it not being a display set, because it's fairly obvious that it was never going to be.
The days of sets like Death Star 2 are long gone. For a playset, I think it's pretty decent, and certainly a lot better than Hoth. Bold move, Lego, let's see if it pays off.
The Ewok village worked from a design standpoint, but this set pretty much foregoes aesthetics entirely in order to maximize play value.
Will kids be able to build an external structure around it? J0rgen I think these comments are spot on. Luke's duel with Vader IS Star Wars as far as I am concerned, and here it only occupies a tiny portion of the model with the "floating" carbon freeze chamber behind it.
Basically I feel they could have omitted the Cloud Car dark red? The Slave 1 looks good and a landing pad is pretty crucial to Cloud City, but as it stands a lot of this set just looks kind of EMPTY given the large space provided.
I think as a playset is works well, as a display piece it's chaotic and rather cluttered and clunky. I ussualy dont buy sets from original triology cuz I dont like it but this set is one of best -atleast for me-this year.
But I wont going to buy because in my country it is going to be like dollars expensier. Then I think back to when I plunked down the same amount for the Ewok Village, that is far superior for playability and display.
I think this should have been released as a series of modular playsets that you could arrange like this finished set, if you chose.
I collect anything related to Lando, so I'll buy this one eventually, but it's gonna hurt more than other sets for the same price.
As a big fan of , I quite like this, but has just taken up all available space in our house, so this is looking like a pass.
It doesn't quite match the high standard the Death Star set for its time to me, anyway. Thanks for raising my spirits again with this article.
When I initially saw this set, I was very pleased with the outcome of this product. However, when reading the article of the unveiling of this set, I was surprised by the high amounts of criticism of the set.
While I can understand some of it, I can sometimes struggle with other aspects of criticism. I just think a lot of people are becoming more disillusioned with the movies and even the sets nowadays.
Anyways, even though I really do like the set, I will not be getting it, simply because it does not fit into my budget, nor will fit onto any shelf I currently have and as I've said many other times, I have other priorities for sets that I want more than this.
I may try to bricklink some figures, but those will be pretty expensive i my eyes. Anyways, thanks for understanding me, even if my opinions are far different from yours.
While I agree that too much negativity can get annoying, What's the point of a comments page if only positive things can be said?
I scroll through the comments to see what Lego fans generally think about the set—not what others want them to think.
Some say, "if you don't like the set then don't buy it. It seems just as good as the Death Stars. Although, I think that there are rooms where detail is lacking.
Overall though, it's a nice set. We are complaining because of the opportunity cost. This playset has taken the place of what could have been a "display piece".
So the phrase "you don't have to buy it" is just annoying. It's not perfect, but I'm still very excited about this. Long overdue revised portrayal of some of the most pivotal scenes of the Saga.
Love the Luke and Lando updates. The mini Slave I is brilliant. Been saving the VIP points for this one. I feel like I could recreate some of the nicer looking rooms with spare parts.
With so many versions of Slave 1 it is disappointing the designers would waste bricks depicting it here. They could have used the bricks for something else.
They also missed a trick by wasting bricks on including a carbon freezing chamber, instead of leaving a space to incorporate the recent https: A central corridor area like this model http: Just look what a Switch or PS4 sets you back, and that is considered a usual birthday present, for some even an Easter present where I come from.
Back to the set itself - I really like it, love the Slave I and might consider exchanging my still sealed UCS one against this.
If it only had an orange Cloud Car.. But as others say, I also find it difficult to find a place where to display it, since it's big and flat and looks best from the top, not the sides.
Scenes captured, looking good, only "im your father" scene here is priseless. I read most of the comments here and i dont any suggestions or facts that they dont like.
Ofcourse and again you expected something else lol. Well as usual the haters are out but at least it is civil this time!!! The one thing that seems worth pointing out here is that this set is one of the most expensive play sets Lego has ever made.
Do the cloud cars only hold the heads of the minifigures? It kind of looks that way based off the hatch and the way it looks in one of the pictures on the set page I won't be getting this one.
I think they should have made a large gray shell display model and then take of quadrants to play with all these inner chambers. But i will skip this one like i skipped the large play set Death Stars No worries, plenty of other AFOL goodies out there these days like Harry Potter and roller coasters!
Personally I prefer minifig scale to "display pieces". Sure, I use mine for display as well, but I still have a playset mentality.
That's why I felt betrayed by the microscale Hogwarts. The small Slave I despite being quite out of scale for a minifigure still looks brilliant imo, kinda makes me wish it was released separately, I definitely would've bought it.
Ya gotta laugh, for ages this set has probably been wish-listed more than any other set except for the Hoth set before it and now it's released, with a bit of everything that's relevant to the film, it's being slated.
Is it perfect, no. Is it expensive, yes. But it's not a bad set. It's got updated minifigures of all the main players that it needs.
It covers almost all of the films main scenes and the majority of it is instantly recognisable for what it's supposed to be. If this had been released with more detail, more rooms and on a larger scale but at a larger cost, it still wouldn't have been right.
I like it enough to add it to my wants list and will definitely be picking this one up at some point. I'm just prepared to wait until I can get it for a price I'm happy with but that's no different to anything else, Lego or otherwise I buy.
Venunder I like the MicroMachines photo you posted there as an example. This is very similar to what I hoped the Cloud city set would look like: Smaller diameter, central hub area, 2 tiers, on some kind of low support column to lift it up a bit.
I never really got the hype about a cloud city set. But I think lego has done as good as they could for a set like this. I actually would love lego to do more detailed modular sets, like the carbon freeze chamber to connect with other sets.
Like the hoth medical chamber, if they did a hoth operations room to go with it. Good 30 quid sets to connect into something truly good.
But anyway, what were those so hyped about this set expecting? This preview has only served to increase my admiration for this set.
Each of the sections look fantastic, as do the mini Slave I and Cloud Car. Sure, it doesnt look super displayable, but I don't think it needs to any more than the Death Star does.
Never mind about the lobot I am bad at finding stuff. Personally I am happy about this. Just like Assault on Hoth there is really no way to make everyone happy with a set that has been anticipated as much as this.
Especially when you consider they have to make it at a price point where enough people will buy it to justify putting it on the market.
Do I think it could be better? Do I like it and intend to buy? Maybe it's just me, but that model would be boring as hell. Give me a set with detail like this any day of the week.
I love this set. It's perfect for my base because I need a playset like with room, the death star type manner is something I've wanted since I was 8.
That said, I don't quite like the cloud car landing spot but.. Also I do appreciate it's inner designs , as I am teased for appreciating beauty in Lego sets, this one isn't bad beauty wise.
Lego makes both play and display sets. Cloud City would be poorly suited for a display model anyway. It would end up as a bunch of grey panels like the Death Star II.
I would've preferred separate sets that connect together, or have it resemble something like the Bespin dome. They should stop making UCS playsets, please.
We all have our checklists of what we'd want to see in a CC set, and there is no way LEGO or any toy company can fulfill every fans expectations.
However, as I said before the key scenes are there, and they are detailed and imo look good. My checklist would not have included another Slave I; when you've got the UCS nothing else will compare: Will I have to get this set?
Yes, at some point I will as it's really the only key OT scene I'm missing from my collection, including these versions of key characters. Although, as others have said I will wait until the price is what I feel a good value to be.
Until that sale comes though there are tons of Wanted List sets to lust after. Forever a broke LEGO fan: The negativity around this set is seriously impressive.
What was everyone actually expecting? Lego has literally created a cloud city set with all of the scenes from cloud city in it. What more could you want?
It's not like Assault on Hoth where the set didn't even match its own name. I'm personally very impressed at how much has been crammed into this set, and I look forward to getting a hold of it.
I think the set is ok, with pros and cons but in general it is a good representation with cool rooms. But I'm really upset with the fact that they didn't consider making a new hair piece for Bespin Leia with two braids and they sorted it out with the one she got for Hoth.
I am close to selling my UCS collection as remakes and play sets are boring me. It was never going to be impressive no matter what Lego did with it.
I've been waiting for a new Cloud City set for years and I'm thrilled that it's finally happening.
I would have preferred CC rendered as modular sets that attach, but unlike so many others, I am not in the mood to complain.
I was startled by the negativity, but opinions are certainly the reason comments sections exist. I'd also say this one is as good as the Death Star.
